ISO 9001 Requirements
What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is the globally recognised standard for quality management systems. Its primary focus is to help organisations consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements.
The standard provides a framework for improving overall business performance and can support stronger customer satisfaction and revenue stability. Organisations of all sizes and in all industries can apply ISO 9001 principles and requirements.

ISO 9001:2015 clauses
Clause 4 – Context of the organisation
The organisation must determine internal and external issues, understand the needs and expectations of interested parties, and define the scope of the quality management system. Risks and opportunities that could impact the system and its intended results must be identified and addressed.
Clause 5 – Leadership
Top management must demonstrate leadership and commitment to the quality management system. This includes establishing a quality policy and quality objectives, assigning roles and responsibilities, and communicating expectations so everyone understands how they contribute to the system.
Clause 6 – Planning
The organisation must plan actions to address risks and opportunities, define quality objectives, and determine how these objectives will be achieved. Planning helps ensure that the quality management system remains effective and aligned with strategic direction.
Clause 7 – Support
The organisation must determine and provide the resources needed for the quality management system, including people, infrastructure, work environment, competence, awareness, communication, and documented information.
Clause 8 – Operation
The organisation must plan, implement, and control operational processes to meet requirements for products and services. This includes requirements review, design and development where applicable, control of externally provided processes, production and service provision, and control of nonconforming outputs.
Clause 9 – Performance evaluation
The organisation must monitor, measure, analyse, and evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the quality management system. This includes customer satisfaction, process performance, internal audits, and management review. Nonconformities and their causes should be recorded, and corrective actions taken where necessary.
Clause 10 – Improvement
ISO 9001 requires continual improvement of the quality management system. Organisations must react to nonconformities, take corrective action, and seek opportunities for improvement to enhance system effectiveness and customer satisfaction over time.

ISO 9001 mandatory documents
The current ISO 9001:2015 standard reduced the number of prescriptive documentation requirements compared with earlier versions and uses the term “documented information” rather than “documents” and “records”.
At a minimum, ISO 9001:2015 requires documented information such as:
- The scope of the quality management system
- A quality policy
- Quality objectives
In addition, organisations must maintain documented information required by specific clauses (for example, on processes, planning, and operation) and any additional documented information they consider necessary for the effective operation and control of their processes.
ISO 9001 certification audit requirements
Organisations seeking third party certification to ISO 9001 must be able to:
- Demonstrate that the required documented information is established and maintained
- Have procedures and processes in place that are appropriate for the organisation and its activities
- Operate in accordance with those procedures and processes
- Provide objective evidence (records, results, audit reports, etc.) that the organisation is operating in line with its quality management system and ISO 9001 requirements
