What is AS/NZS 4801?
AS/NZS 4801 is an Australian and New Zealand standard for occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS). It sets out requirements for organisations to develop, implement, and maintain a systematic approach to managing health and safety risks in the workplace.
Many businesses historically compared AS/NZS 4801 with OHSAS 18001, which had similar intent but a different origin and structure. Both standards were used to help reduce workplace accidents by providing a framework for managing hazards and risks. Our health and safety consultants can explain the differences between the standards and advise which approach is most appropriate for your organisation, including transitioning toward ISO 45001 where relevant.

Is AS/NZS 4801 still valid in Australia?
A survey conducted by Safe Work Australia reported 114,435 serious compensation claims for workplace related injuries in 2018–2019, with the main causes including:
- Body stressing
- Falls, trips, and slips
- Being hit by moving objects
These statistics highlight how workplace injuries can cost businesses significantly through lost time, compensation, and disruption. AS/NZS 4801 was developed to provide a structured approach to occupational health and safety management and to encourage safer practices in businesses.
While ISO 45001 is now the primary international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, many organisations in Australia still maintain systems based on AS/NZS 4801 or use it alongside ISO 45001 and work health and safety (WHS) legislation. Our consultants can help you understand current expectations and plan a suitable approach for your organisation.
